yumm!

my sister in-law sent us japanese candy and snacks. yummy!! the ones on the left are these cheesy puff things, but are kind of sweet too. the middle ones taste like ice cream cones covered in chocolate. and the last ones are kind of like chocolate stuffed pretzel goldfish.

apparently i'm going with the one post every three months thing. i've been using twitter lately. it's like one sentence blogging, heh.

i got this little guy the other day. i love it. it's easy to have a camera all the time now. it takes pretty nice pictures. 5mp and stuff, although it's better outside than in. inside, if there's enough light, it's pretty good at taking pictures quick. if i use the flash though, i gotta make sure what i'm taking the pic of is far far away or it gets really overexposed. it's an insanely bright flash. i want to get an eye-fi for it sometime. i haven't even really put any pictures i've taken online yet. maybe i should start keeping like a picture blog. hmmm. of course they'd probably be mostly pictures of my dog and cat. lol. ok ok, i'll start today. here's a picture of something i saw yesterday.

Wow, it's been forever since I posted anything. I guess I haven't been doing anything interesting.

Today I knitted the first thing I ever knitted without a pattern. I'm not a great knitter, but I think it came out ok.

Just in case anyone else wants to make one, here's what i did...

----stem----
co 3
i-cord for a while
put 2 st on holder

----leaf----
repeat for each stitch on holder
1 kfb 2
2 (an all even otherwise marked) p
3 k2 kfb k1
5 k1 kfb k1 kfb k1
7 k
9 k1 ssk k1 k2tog k1
11 k2 bo1 k2
12 bo2 break yarn.
bo2 (i just used a small piece for this)

---making---
bind in extras.
with the two at the top of the stem, i went through each leaf to give it a little more support than the 2 st. from the kfb.

i hope this all makes sense. first try!

freak of nature

today i harvested this freak of nature from my garden. it's the third double tomato i've gotten so far, but this is the first one where you can see the seam so clearly. it looks like the two tomatoes were actually sewn together. weird...

anyone have any good things to do with tomatoes? today i'm gonna cut up the cherry tomatoes and toss them in vinaigrette and fresh basil.

yesterday was the first time i've ever seen one in any store. i did not buy one, however, as i'm still holding out for a black one.

have a skull

i knitted this thing the other day. it uses the pattern in Pretty in Punk. it's made with crappy crappy old hand me down red yarn. i mean seriously, this stuff SUCKS. i probably won't be using it again, but oh well. you can't be too picky about free yarn i guess. i like th skull though so maybe i'll put that on some other stuff...

and i'm taking my bobble head pen with me!

i guess i won't be writing any more posts bitching about this job. i just was notified with two hours left on a friday afternoon that it's my last day! and yes, it's fully within their power to fire a temporary worker with no notice. you may think i'm upset, but i'm not really. i have the power to completely understand their position, no matter how much tact they use (or don't). so if anyone needs a web developer or sys admin, don't forget about me!

and i'm taking my bobble head pen with me...

even death may die

One thing you should know about me is i'm addicted to google reader. i have hundreds of feeds and read most of them. today, i was reading the how-stuff-works page on the necronomicon. so the necronomicon is an invention of h.p. lovecraft in case you didn't know. it's sort of a dark spell book. well lovecraft has an immense cult following and there are many published books entitled necronomicon. i, in fact, own a copy of the version by simon, which doesn't really stay true to the lovecraft stories, i've heard. this particular version is made up of various occult rituals and sumerian mythology. i haven't read the whole thing, but it's different. if you've ever read the satanic bible or anything, it's kind of like that.

so i think it would be kind of cool if stuff like this really existed. if lovecraft really did know about a secret book that gives you immense power. but it would be like those books bound in human skin with a lock that would suck you in if you opened it. oooo

well anyway, i haven't ever read any lovecraft, but i keep thinking i should (i'm not sure if i'd like horror books or not though). i actually learned about the necronomicon from robert anton wilson's books, the illuminatus! trilogy (or was it schrodinger's cat?). one thing that's stuck with me since i read it was this passage:
gestorben ist nicht, was für ewig ruht,
und mit unbekannten aonen mag sogar der tod noch sterben
or as it is in the necronomicon:
That is not dead which can eternal lie.
And with strange aeons even death may die.

phoneless iphone

i REALLY want an ipod touch. that thing looks so cool. i can't do browsing or google sms with my phone, so having a browser in my pocket would be awesome... i'm usually around a wifi point. plus multi-touch input! I got to play with an iphone once, and while i wouldn't use at&t or spend hundreds on a phone/contract, i really liked the device. it seems very well done. the screen is just freaking amazing; so bright and high resolution. and the touch input worked just like it does in the videos. it's like it just knows what you want to do.

all right, let's not get carried away. this thing was just released, maybe i should wait till the second iteration. the problem i see now is the 8/16G capacity. wtf is that about apple? the ipod "classic" they're calling it now has a 160G capacity. my current ipod (3rd gen) is 20G (i'm using 13G, don't think i'd want to downgrade my space so much). tell me the next iteration will have at least 20G for the low end model. i just have to wait.... wait... wait...

i'm so boring

this job is so boring. i'm given stuff like once or twice a week to do! so i've decided i'm going to start posting in this thing at work! exciting. shhhh, don't tell. i'm technically supposed to be keeping track of my hours like a contractor, but i usually have to make shit up to fill in the time. you have no idea how many hours i can spend "going over website" or "checking links." fantastic.

moving on...

a couple days ago, we started watching heroes. omg.so.good. we don't have tv so we usually end up watching shows late, but it's nice having an entire season, especially with a show like this. i remember being at nfm during the airing of the season finale. there were crowds of people around the big screen tvs. now i can see why. i did not honestly expect the show to be as good as it is. we're only at episode 7 of 23, but i'm hooked. i love shows/movies with so much interconnectivity. sometimes it gets a little gory, but i can deal with it for the story (kind of like saw). the japanese guys are my absolute favorite. that hiro is so funny. i like the cop too. and when the cheerleader woke up on the autopsy table! that was great. so to anyone who didn't see it the first time around, i recommend downloading the first season and watching it. it's definitely worth it.

In Stitches

i've jumped on the bandwagon of knitting. it's pretty fun and there's some awesome patterns out there. i started with the one from the newest Craft: ... a crime scene scarf. since it's my first project, i'm taking pictures to keep track of my progress. i'm enjoying making it, but i need to get better at knitting. i'm not leaving enough string between the letters and they're getting all squished. and it's getting harder to keep the thing unrolled. i wonder if that's normal in a scarf though... well, it shouldn't be too noticeable cause i'll be folding it in half and stitching the sides together. i read somewhere that after you're done knitting, you can get it wet and stretch it out to dry and it'll end up even. i'm hoping so...

Everyone's talking about VA Tech

So I will too...

Someone asked me what I thought about it. What can I think about it? It's a tragedy... what else can I say. I've seen people's blogs about this, talking about the need for higher gun control, making guns harder to get. I don't know what the solution is. I'm not one who believes we should be restricted in our rights, but how can we protect the many from the one who may snap. And how will we know who it will be?

I read yesterday that a certain university (I can't speak for others) was planning a candle light vigil last night for the victims. I think at one point I may have thought this was a nice gesture. Maybe I've become too jaded, but when I saw that, I was not touched or comforted by the thought. A candle light vigil.... how is that going to help? "Hey look everyone, we feel bad! We're showing we feel bad by burning stuff." No. It may help one or two people in the unlikely event they were related to one of the victims only by giving them other people to comfort them. Other than that... no. Why do we do things like this? Is it really just to show everyone else that we are "good people" or do the people planning these events really think they're making some sort of difference somehow? I really don't have any answers. I wish I did, I wish I could make the actions and reactions of the masses make sense in my brain.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Store...

and I can only describe it with images. Images made very crappily with Paint and a mouse, w00t!

So... pretty close to my house we have this intersection that looks kinda like this:

So there we are and the cars are all lined up normally. We're sitting in the lane to turn left behind that other guy sitting there.

The green light is going left and right and when it changes, there will first be a green arrow for the bottom turning lane. So apparently the guy behind the guy turning left in front of us decided for whatever reason he could sit in the lane next to the left turning lane.

But the guy turning left from the right side wasn't gonna get HIS turn taken away from him. Or, I don't know, maybe he didn't realize that car was there.

But when he made the turn, instead of backing up and correcting himself or whatever (cause we all saw what happened) he just pulls onto the island. What an idiot! I don't know if he got off the island (he was in a little PoS car) cause we didn't wait around, but I do know he had to wait for a buncha people before he could even go.

Hot Wheels are BAD!!!

"The 2007 Hot Wheels lineup includes fun muscle cars and speed demons, but omitting practical and fuel-efficient vehicles sends the wrong message to kids" (http://blog.wired.com/cars/2006/11/toy_cars_lack_f.html)

I read this snippet today while browsing Google Reader and probably overreacted.

hot wheels shouldn't have to send messages to kids
doesn't anyone ever take responsibility themselves anymore??
how about PARENTING??
oh right.... i forgot. we live in a society of blame and frivolous lawsuits

these are some hot wheels from when i was a kid. they aren't the "practical" OR "fuel-efficient." that is SO not the point of hot wheels. besides... i turned out to be a conscientious gas consumer... no toy car is gonna tell me what to do!

grrrrr (annoying nerd stuff)

So i've been working with this problem for a while and the solution REALLY annoyed me. I used to be able to use the command+k to access my windows shares using smb right. blahblah, nothing difficult. Then one day, it stops working!?!?! I would type in the smb://serverip and it'd be like, "cannot connect cause name or password is incorrect." Huh?!?! I didn't even get a prompt box. What the hell?? yeah, so finally, after stupid trying of stuff... using cifs, trying different formats for the connection, using smbclient from terminal (which btw worked, but i'm too dumb to work the command line), disabling and enabling the microsoft signed traffic dealy (disabled cause previous to 10.4, had to be. i have 10.4, found out it encrypts by default) I find out why it isn't working. YOU HAVE TO HAVE NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP ENABLED!!! WHAT!?!??!?! it's true. as soon as i enabled it on the servers, bam, authentication box, connection works. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. it doesn't even make sense.

ok, now so it's not just a nerd post... the microwavable chef boyardee mac&cheese is gross.

here's our first edible fruit produced! i'm excited. any ideas what to do with banana peppers? we haven't got any of the other ingredients to make salsa yet and i don't want to waste these guys. they smell really good.
